Harrell, Reuben

William Roweson, an emancipated slave, formerly the property of Conrad Doll of Frederick Co, MD, of one part to Reuben Ross of the County of Wythe and Commonwealth of Virginia of the other part; witneth that the said William Roweson voluntarily hath put, placed, and bound himself to the said Reuben Ross as a servant with him to dwell for the full term of twenty five years from the date hereof during all which time the said William doth covenant and agree with the said Reuben Ross him well and faithfully to serve in all such lawful business as the said William shall be put to by his said Master according to best of his power, wit, and ability and honesty and obediently shall behave himself to the said Reuben Ross his master, that he will not desert the service of his master for & during the term of years aforesaid and will not go from the place assigned him for his above a distance not more than ten miles without a pass from his said Master or from such person as his said Master may authorize for that purpose and the said William further doth covenant that he will deliver the instruments of his emancipation to the person into whose hands this indenture is given to be kept in trust by him until the full term of years aforesaid is expired for the performance of all and every covenant on the part of the said William himself in the sum of two thousand dollars.

And the said Reuben Ross on his part doth covenant and agree to and with said William to furnish him with sufficient drink, clothing, washing, lodging & all other things suitable for a servant during the said term.

And also will pay him the said William the sum of two hundred dollars in cash for and in consideration of his service to be performed aforesaid. In testimony whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and affirm their seals the day and year first above written. William Roweson made his mark; Reuben Ross signed; witnesses: James Boyd, Thomas Riders, Reuben Harrell, Randolph Ross.

Grand Jury presented overseer of the road from James Crockett’s to the ford of Reed Creek at Robert Grimes’ [Graham’s] for not keeping the same repaired; also the overseer of the road from Jacob Stealy’s [Staley’s) to Michael Wenrick’s [Venrick’s] for not keeping the same in repair; George Wampler, Sr., for selling Cyder Royal by retail without a license, one quart to Adam Kettering and one quart to Peter Nave, at his house by the knowledge of Adam Kettering and Peter Nave; Martin Miller, same whiskey one-half pint to Peter Nave; Erhart Zimmerman for selling by retail whiskey and brandy without license, one-half pint whiskey to Benjamin Smith on the 10th instant and ½ pint brandy to John Harrold, the 10th instant at his own house by knowledge of Willson Davis, and Benjn. Smith; James Smith and Benj. Alderson for unlawful gaming by playing cards at the house of Randal Fugate in Wythe, Sept. 1, 1805 by the testimony of Reuben Ross and Thomas Herbert.

Surveyed for William Harrald 12 acres of land by virtue of an entry made the 10th day of July 1807 on part of a land office treasury warrant number 7444 and issued the 28 of October 1781 lying in Wythe county on the waters of New River and bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning at two White Oaks a corner to his own land & running thence N. 60° E. 32 poles to a large white oak on the north side of a hill N. 20° W. 66 poles to a white oak black oak and hickory sapling on the south side of a ridge S. 53° W. 40 poles to a black oak on a line of his own land & thence S. 69° E. 60 poles with said line to the beginning.

This Indenture made the 27th day of July, 1808, between William Harrell of the County of Wythe State of Virginia of the one part, John Feeley, Joseph Russell & John Draper Junior of the other part, trustees, Witnesseth that the said William Harrell for and in consideration of three hundred and fifty Dollars, hath bargained, sold and relinquished unto John Feeley, Joseph Russell and John Draper Jr., trustees, a certain tract or parcel of land situate in the county aforesaid on the waters of New River for the express and special purpose of erecting a house thereon for the purpose of a Seminary of learning and divine worship, and bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning at a Buck eye, South 75, West 14 poles to a white Oak by Humphrey Ellis’s fence, South 24, East 15 Poles to a white Oak, North 73, East 18 poles to a white Oak, North 26, East 6 poles to a white Oak, from thence to the beginning together with all the appurtenances threunto belonging for the sole use and purpose aforesaid, unto the aforesaid John Feeley, Joseph Russell and John Draper Jr., and their successors forever. And the said William Harrell doth for himself, his heirs &c. warrant and forever defend the aforesaid tract and parcel of land unto the said John Feeley, Joseph Russell and John Draper Jr. and their successors forever. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name & affixed my seal the year & date above written.

Holbert Allison, David Sayers, William Harrell and James Simpson viewed the way for the new road proposed by John Flora from the head of Draper’s Valley to the main road between Russells and Feeleys and Humphrey Eillis’s pass1ng sa1d Flora’s mill made their report and the following are to appear to show reasons why the said road should not be opened: William Foster, Samuel Shepperd, Andrew Boyd, James Foster, heirs of Joseph Honeaker, deceased, Adolph Flora, Alex, Miller, Randolph Fugate, and John Flora.
